Same-Sex Marriage Laws in Netherlands

In the year 2000, Netherlands allowed a marriage legislation to be enacted which provides that partners of the same sex could enter into a contract of marriage. The marriage partners which belong to the same sex must abide by the same responsibilities and exercise the same rights of different-sex married partners. The sole exception to this marriage partnership is the prohibition of applying adoption process for any child from another country.

Same-sex marriage has been a constant debate around the globe. But for me, the real problem is the way we follow the norms that are long viewed as proper and right. The government of Netherlands failed to realize that same-sex married partners cannot bear children and that their options to adopt a child must not be limited. Aside from that, the legislation they passed and enforced in their country may be a bold salutation of the freedom of choice but it surely affects the emotional and psychological development of same-sex couples. The rationale behind that is the fact that there is an emotional and psychological satisfaction that different-sex married couples could have in a marriage relationship that is impossible for same-sex couples to hold on to. Hence, same-sex marriage legislation in Netherlands is not conducive to the development of marriage relationships. The government of other countries that are still considering in applying the same law must realize these matters.
